Follow Along Heavy Work Activities

How do we help a child learn about where their body is in space if they are having difficulty? While there are numerous strategies that therapists use, one of the simplest activities is Heavy Work. I describe heavy work as any activity that involves pushing, pulling, or lifting. These type of activities activate those important proprioceptors in our muscles, bones, and joints. And the beauty of heavy work is that not only does it activate a child’s proprioceptive system to help them figure out where they are in space, it also has a calming and organizing effect on the body. This calming and organizing effect can help improve focus and maintaining attention. Heavy work activities also require the use of core and postural muscles which give then the added benefit of  improve strength. Sounds like a double win to me!

In last week’s post and video, we talked all about body awareness, proprioception, and why heavy work is important. Make sure you check out the post here and the video here. In this week’s video, I have some simple follow along heavy work activity sessions for you.

As I always do, these activities are accessible to all ability levels. All of the activities in Session #1 are done in the sitting position. The activities in Session #2 are all exercise based for kiddos that don’t enjoy games like crab walking. Session #3 is full of ADL type activities such as carrying groceries. Session #4 is full of play based activities like wheelbarrow walking. These activities will require a few household items to complete, but they are pretty common things and can be substituted for others. I will provide a list of items needed before each session begins.

I hope you had a great time trying these heavy work sessions. If you have any other fun Heavy Work activities, please share them in the comments below. If you would like to check out more of my 5 minute workouts, click here.

Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope you have an amazing week!
